RESUMEN: Se ha propuesto que las medidas del hueso hioides varían entre los diferentes sexos y grupos de edad. El objetivo del estudio fur estudiar la morfometría del hueso hioides en pacientes jordanos. Se analizaron tomografías computarizadas en 3D de 637 pacientes. Se midieron diez parámetros del hueso hioides, incluyendo la longitud anteroposterior, la longitud de los cuernos mayores (derecho e izquierdo), la altura de los cuernos mayores (derecho e izquierdo), el ancho del cuerpo hioides, la altura del cuerpo hioides, la distancia entre los puntos medios de los extremos posteriores de los cuernos mayores del hueso hioides, el ángulo entre los cuernos mayores derecho e izquierdo, y la distancia del hueso hioides a la columna vertebral. Además, se documentaron el nivel vertebral, el rango de fusión, la morfología de la língula del cuerpo hioides y la forma del hueso hioides. Todas las dimensiones del hioides fueron más largas en los hombres, pero el mayor ángulo de los cuernos fue más ancho en las mujeres. En pacientes menores de 30 años, los parámetros son los más pequeños con el ángulo más amplio. La distancia del hioides a la columna vertebral es mayor en el sexo masculino (30-49) años. No se observó fusión entre el cuerpo hioides y los cuernos mayores en pacientes menores de 10 años, pero se encontró fusión (unilateral o bilateral) en solo el 73,2 % de los pacientes ≥ 70 años. El hioides estaba mayormente al nivel de la vértebra C3 y en forma de “U”. La forma de la língula era mayoritariamente "Cicatriz" en los hombres (especialmente ≥ 50 años) y "Nada" en las mujeres (especialmente < 50 años). El máximo crecimiento de las dimensiones del hioides es antes de los 30 años. La fusión entre el cuerpo hioides y los cuernos mayores no se observó en pacientes menores de 10 años. No obstante, las características del hueso hioides no pudieron predecir la edad o el sexo en nuestra muestra. Además, la tomografía computarizada 3D es una herramienta excelente para evaluar la anatomía de la región de la cabeza y el cuello.

SUMMARY: Hyoid bone measurements have been proposed to vary between different genders and age groups. The aim of the study is to study hyoid morphometrics among Jordanian patients. 3D-CT scans of 637 patients were analyzed. Ten parameters of hyoid bone were measures, including the anteroposterior length, length of greater horns (right and left), height of greater horns (right and left), width of hyoid body, height of hyoid body, the distance between the midpoints of the posterior ends of the greater horns of the hyoid bone, the angle between right and left greater horns, and the distance of the hyoid bone to the vertebral column. Also, vertebral level, fusion rank, morphology of hyoid body lingula, and shape of hyoid bone were documented. All hyoid dimensions were longer in males, but greater horns angle was wider in females. In patients younger than 30 years, the parameters are the smallest with the widest angle. The distance from hyoid to vertebral column is higher in males (30-49) years of age. No fusion between hyoid body and greater horns was observed in patients younger than 10 years, but fusion (unilateral or bilateral) was found in only 73.2 % of patients ≥ 70 years. The hyoid was mostly at vertebra C3 level and “U” shaped. The lingula shape was mostly “Scar” in males (especially ≥ 50 years) and “Nothing” in females (especially < 50 years). The maximum growth of hyoid dimensions is before age of 30 years. Fusion between hyoid body and greater horns was not seen in patients younger than 10 years. Otherwise, the hyoid features failed to predict age or gender in our sample. Furthermore, 3D-CT scan is an excellent tool to assess the anatomy of head and neck region.

Resumo As tênias de importância zoonótica têm sido descritas como um dos principais problemas de saúde pública. A pesquisa atual teve como objetivo avaliar a prevalência de tênias entre crianças em idade escolar de 5 a 12 anos que residem no distrito de Lower Dir, Paquistão, de janeiro de 2019 a dezembro de 2019. Os métodos de preparação para montagem úmida em solução salina/iodo foram usados para exame de fezes. Os dados foram analisados usando métodos descritivos e estáticos apropriados. Das 400 crianças estudadas, 71,7% estavam infectadas com uma ou mais espécies de parasitas intestinais. Infecção única de espécies de cestóides foi encontrada em 69 indivíduos com prevalência de 17,2% e infecções parasitárias múltiplas foram identificadas em 19,7% (n = 79/400) indivíduos. As infecções múltiplas foram compostas por 10% (n = 40) dupla, 6,75% (n = 27) tripla e 3% (n = 12) quádrupla. Um total de 9 espécies de helmintos e uma espécie de infecção por protozoários. Entre os helmintos, Ascaris lumbricoides foi o mais prevalente 33,1% (n = 95), Taenia saginata 22,6% (n = 65), ancilóstomo 19,8% (n = 57), Hymenolepis nana 18,8% (n = 54), Enterobius vermicularis e Hymenolepis diminuta 1,39% (n = 4cada), Trichuris trichura 1,04% (n = 3), Toxocara spp 0,69% (n = 2) e Schistosoma japonicum 0,34% (n = 1). Uma espécie de protozoário foi Cryptosporidium spp 0,69% (n = 2) no estudo atual. No caso de A.lumbricoides, ancilostomíase, E.vermicularis, T.trichura, T.saginata, H.nana e H.diminuta, as crianças do sexo masculino com menos de 8 anos de idade estavam altamente infectadas. Outras infecções são relatadas na mesma prevalência, com ligeira diferença, se houver. Concluímos que há uma necessidade de campanhas em massa para criar consciência sobre saúde e higiene em crianças e a necessidade de desenvolvimento de programas eficazes de controle da pobreza, porque a desparasitação por si só não é adequada para controlar infecções parasitárias.

Abstract Tapeworms of zoonotic importance have been described as a leading public health problem. Current research was aim to assess the prevalence of tapeworms among 5-12years school children residing in district Lower Dir, Pakistan from January 2019-December 2019. The wet mount preparation in saline/iodine/methods were used for stool examination. Data was analyzed using appropriate descriptive, static methods. Of the 400 children studied 71.7% were infected with one or more species of intestinal parasites. Single infection of cestode species was found in 69 individuals with 17.2% prevalence and multiple parasitic infections were identified in 19.7% (n=79/400) individuals. The multiple infection were comprised as 10% (n=40) double, 6.75% (n=27) triple and 3% (n=12) quadruple. A total of 9 species of helminths and one species of protozoan infection. Among the helminths Ascaris lumbricoides was the most prevalent 33.1% (n=95), Taenia saginata 22.6% (n=65), hookworm 19.8% (n=57), Hymenolepis nana 18.8% (n=54), Enterobius vermicularis and Hymenolepis diminuta 1.39% (n=4each), Trichuris trichura 1.04% (n=3), Toxocara spp 0.69% (n=2) and Schistosoma japonicum 0.34% (n=1) were reported. One protozoan species was Cryptosporidium spp 0.69% (n=2) in current study. In case of A.lumbricoides, hookworm, E.vermicularis, T.trichura, T.saginata, H.nana and H.diminuta the male children of below 8 years of age were highly infected. Other infections are reported in the same prevalence with slight difference if any. We conclude that there is a need for mass scale campaigns to create awareness regarding health and hygiene in children and the need for development of effective poverty control programs because deworming alone is not adequate to control parasitic infections.

Abstract Objective: To determine the prevalence of head and neck cancer in the Oncology Service of the Eugenio Espejo Hospital, from 2002 to 2015. Methods: This is an epidemiological, analytical and cross-sectional study, the data was retrieved from the medical records of patients who were treated with head and neck cancer, all data was collected and transcribed onto an Excel spreadsheet, then coded and analyzed in STATA version 14.0. Descriptive Statistics and the Chi-square and Poisson tests were used with a level of significance of 0.05% at a level of confidence of 95%. Results: There was a prevalence in female gender of 50.7%, the age from 50 to 60 years represented 20.3%, level of education (elementary) with 53.1%, place of residence (highlands) with 76.7%, occupation household chores with 38.4%, anatomical region oral cavity 36.4%, under surgical treatment 38.9%, the time of hospital treatment from 1 to 180 days 44.5% and 31.8% of the patients finished the treatment. Conclusions: Head and neck cancer prevailed in the female gender in the age of 55, ± 5 years, most were from the Andean Mountain (Sierra) region with low level of instruction and whom perform household chores, The oral cavity was the most affected anatomical region.

Resumen Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de cáncer de cabeza y cuello en el Servicio de Oncología del Hospital de Especialidades Eugenio Espejo, periodo 2002 al 2015. Métodos: Es un estudio epidemiológico, analítico y transversal; los datos fueron tomados de las historias clínicas de pacientes atendidos con cáncer de cabeza y cuello, fueron registrados en una planilla de Excel, codificados y analizados en el paquete de estadística STATA versión 14.0, estadística descriptiva, los test de Chi cuadrada y de Poisson, con un nivel de significancia 0.05% y una confiabilidad del 95%. Resultados: Existió una prevalencia discreta en sexo femenino con el 50.7%, la edad de 50-60 años el 20.3%, nivel de educación (primaria) el 53.1%, residencia «sierra» el 76.7%, ocupación quehaceres domésticos el 38.4%; la región anatómica cavidad bucal (36.4%); el tratamiento quirúrgico fue el 38.9%; tiempo de tratamiento hospitalario (de 1 a 180 días) el 44.5% y el 31.8% finalizó el tratamiento. Conclusiones: El cáncer de cabeza y cuello prevaleció más en el sexo femenino entre la edad de 55 años ± 5 años. La mayoría era de la región sierra, con bajo nivel de instrucción, y realizaban quehaceres domésticos. La cavidad bucal fue la región anatómica más afectada.

Different clays collected from local sources, including Kaolinite, Montmorollinte, Palygorskite and Vermiculite have been utilized for the selective adsorption of sulphur compounds prevailing in petroleum products i.e. crude oil, kerosene and diesel oil. The desulphurization activity of the clay was compared with the charcoal, ion exchange resins and with each other. Desulphurization was performed in batch operation at different time intervals i.e 1, 3 and 6 hrs at 40 ºC temperature. Out of different adsorbents used, Kaoilinte exhibited the maximum desulphurization yield of 60 %, 76 % and 64 % at 6 hrs adsorption incase of crude oil, kerosene and diesel oil respectively. All the mineral clays adsorbents were characterized by surface area, SEM and EDX analysis. The FT-IR study of the desulphurized fractions revealed that mostly high molecular weight thioles and thiophenic compounds were depleted during adsorption process.
